"I am a retired History Teacher who started to make various chess sets to remember different times in history. I then got into the 3D modeling and created unique figures for different sets. I love the detail that you get when printing 3D figures and then started making the highly detailed figures in resin to stand alone. I then started making various bases with different bas-relief images on the sides to make a base which might tell a story. Now, each figure is different with their own unique base. Through my work, I aim to honor those who have shaped our world, ensuring their stories are never forgotten." - Thomas Wierenga
Thomas Wierenga, a seasoned educator with a rich background in primary and secondary education, has spent over three decades nurturing young minds, specializing in history. His extensive career, marked by a passion for negotiation, budgeting, and teaching, has been dedicated to illuminating the past, particularly European history. Thomas holds a Bachelor of Arts in European History from Grand Valley State University and a Master of Education, further solidifying his expertise in the field.
Since February 2018, Thomas has soared to new heights as a Drone Videographer at Drone Views LLC in the Greater Grand Rapids, Michigan Area. With a keen eye and a love for flying drones since 2012, he captures unique and breathtaking moments using a variety of drones and a Sony a650 with gimbal. His aerial footage and photographs tell stories that transcend the ordinary, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the world from above.
Thomas's journey in education began in August 2004 at Forest Hills Eastern High School, where he taught a broad spectrum of subjects, including World History, U.S. History, Economics, Civics, Psychology, World Religions, and an engaging elective titled History vs. Hollywood. His tenure as a History Teacher spanned 13 years, ending in December 2017, leaving a lasting impact on countless students.
Before his career in education, Thomas served as a Customer Service Representative at Delta Airlines from May 1999 to May 2000. His responsibilities included managing front desk and gate duties, ensuring a seamless travel experience for passengers.
Thomas's entrepreneurial spirit also led him to become an Independent Business Owner and Travel Agent at Alpine Travel Inc. from August 1985 to November 1999. During this time, he managed all aspects of the business and specialized in group travel, including being a Disney Travel Expert.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Thomas is a proud father of five along with his loving wife Nancy who is the inspiration behind his love of 3d printing, with two sons serving in the U.S. Army. His eldest son is a Captain, 3rd son was commissioned in the U.S. Army and the 2nd son. Also has two children adopted from China.
In his personal time, Thomas has channeled his love for history into a unique hobby—creating intricate chess sets that pay homage to different historical periods. His passion for 3D modeling and resin casting has resulted in the creation of unique and detailed figures that tell stories from the past. As the Owner and Founder of Custom Chess Sets LLC, Thomas continues to celebrate history through his craft, bringing to life the people and events that have shaped our world.

"I started the business to help create mini-statues to help us never forget. When various groups started tearing down different monuments, I vowed to create mini-statues of various individuals to helps us remember them. I have made figures of different Generals in history, Medal of Honor recipiants who died for our country, regular soldiers who gave their lives for their causes just name a few."
